Verizon’s annual Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) for 2025 was released in April, which is always interesting to read. This year, the Verizon DBIR team analyzed 22,052 real-world security incidents.

Third-party relationships at banks continue to remain prominent. Interestingly, the percentage of breaches involving a third party doubled from 15% to 30%.

The Verizon DBIR team found, for the second year in a row, that System Intrusion was the top attack employed against the financial and insurance sector.
Verizon explains system intrusion as the “hands-on keyboard” type of attackers, in which they’re using a combination of automation and craft to breach organizations’ defenses and compromise their environment, mainly with the purpose of deploying Ransomware, which accounts for 75% of breaches in this pattern.
